Experiential Learning

To help prepare our students for their college years and future careers, the NSLC focuses on leadership development, goal setting and intrinsic motivation. We are dedicated to: inspiring our students to realize their potential, make informed and thoughtful decisions, set purposeful and tangible goals, and work toward exceptional futures. All of our students, regardless of their chosen curriculum or area of study, leave the NSLC feeling more confident, self-aware, and ready to face the challenges ahead.

NSLC provides students the opportunity to step outside the typical classroom learning environment and into the world of active learning. Our students are fully engaged in exciting and thought-provoking role-play activities, case studies, debates, and hands-on simulations. During each conference we create an open and safe environment in which cooperative learning is the primary means of sharing information, thoughts, and opinions.

We encourage the students to learn from each other and most importantly, to make connections to their life at home, community and future goals. Whether the students are debating medical ethics, listening to the Secretary of Defense, or visiting the Museum of Modern Art, we create opportunities for self discovery and the exploration of new and exciting ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NSLC? What is the curriculum?

The National Student Leadership Conference hosts career-focused leadership development programs for outstanding high school students from across the U.S. and more than 45 countries. Each NSLC program consists of a core leadership development program

coupled with a hands-on exploration of a career area. Students participate in small-group workshops and simulations as well as meet with leaders in their chosen profession.

How long has the NSLC offered programs?

The NSLC hosted its first conference in 1989 on Law & Advocacy. Since that time we have expanded to provide programs in a variety of career areas, including Medicine, Forensic Science, International

Diplomacy, Journalism, International Business, Political Science, Business, Engineering, Sports Management, Theater and the Arts.

Is the NSLC a member of the Better Business Bureau? Is the NSLC a member of the Better Business Bureau Online Reliability Program?

Yes, the NSLC is an invited member in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. A copy of our Reliability Report can be found online at www.bbb.org by searching for either National Student Leadership Foundation or National Student Leadership Conference.

Unfortunately the NSLC is not a member of the Online Reliability Program because nonprofit organizations are ineligible for participation in this program at this time. However, we look forward to participating as soon as possible.

How did you get my name?

There are a number of different ways we may have gotten your name. National educator organizations such as NACAC, NCSS, and NASSP provide member lists so that schools can become aware of our

programs. We also ask educators who already nominate students to our program to recommend colleagues who would like to learn more about the NSLC.

What happens after I nominate a student?

Each student you nominate will receive a full nomination packet, including a course catalog, application, information about scholarships, and a certificate recognizing their nomination.

Are nominations kept confidential?

Nominations are kept strictly confidential. While nominated students will be told that you have nominated them, we will not sell or redistribute student information to any other source.

What is the average age/grade of the students?

We seek nominations of current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students. The majority of students attending the summer programs are rising juniors and seniors.

Do you have scholarships available?

In an effort to make the NSLC program available to all qualified students, regardless of socio-economic status, the NSLC has developed two scholarship programs. Nominating educators are entered to

receive one of one hundred $1,000 scholarships that can be distributed to any students. Students may also apply for scholarships using our Scholarship Application.

Do students travel as a group or by themselves?

The NSLC accepts students on an individual basis. While some students may choose to attend with a friend or classmate, schools are not responsible for

sending a group of students or accompanying students to the program. Students are chaperoned by NSLC staff.
