Discover the world of engineering at the NSLC on Engineering for middle school students.

With a focus on aerospace, biotechnology and robotics, students will spend time building, experimenting, and learning the impact science has on society. Hands‐on activities are designed to help future engineers explore the educational paths open to them in high school, college, and beyond. Trips may include: NASA Goddard Flight Center, National Building Museum and the Smithsonian Institution.

Hands-on Simulations

Our Engineering program for middle school students uses an interactive approach to learning that gives you an opportunity to explore the world of engineering.

Topics include:

  • General Lab: Learning to Pipette
  • Engineering: Water Filtration Project
  • Engineering: Magnet Motors/Mouse-Trap Car
  • Chemical: Make Your Own Lactose Milk
  • Chemical: Exploring Polymers

 

Behind-the-Scenes Tours

An important part of the NSLC middle school programs is seeing the sites around our nation’s capital. These trips are designed as both sightseeing tours and educational trips specifically tailored to explore the field of engineering.

Students are escorted on all field trips and stay within their TA Group or other supervised groups.

Leadership Development

At the heart of each of our youth leadership programs is a curriculum designed to build concrete leadership skills that will help you succeed. Interactive lectures and small-group workshops will give you an opportunity to build upon your strengths and minimize your weaknesses.

Leadership topics tailored to the Engineering program include:

  • Conflict Resolution
  • Negotiation
  • Public Speaking
  • Intrapersonal Communication

Tuition

Program tuition includes housing, all on-campus meals, course materials, academic expenses, and activities. Tuition also includes chartered, air-conditioned motor coaches for off-campus briefings and tours. Note: Students are responsible for the cost of travel to and from the program as well as individual spending money for souvenirs, laundry, and a few off-campus meals during fields trips and tours.
